At the end of the 17th century there was a tremendous burst of canal building and plans were drawn up for a Dorset & Somerset canal which was to join Bristol to Poole much as the Somerset & Dorset railway did later on. Unfortunately on about 12 miles of it were built near Frome in Somerset which must have been very frustrating for James Fussell, ironmaster of Mells, who invented and build working lifts fir the canal boats which were a lot quicker to use than conventional lock systems and very economical with water.
