Cecil Sharp was the most inspirational figure within the folk movement in the early part of the 20th century. He was a great collector and between 1903 and 1907 he noted 1099 songs from the labourers, sailors and gypsies of Somerset. He gave the songs piano accompaniments and adapted the words so that they were suitable for singing in the drawing rooms and schools thoughout England. The Red Herring is one of his gleanings from Somerset.
