There is no doubt in my mind that William Barnes, the Dorset dialect poet, was a great man. He wife a linguist, teacher, musician, cleric, wood carver, historian and most of all a very caring person When his wife died he wrote this poem, which in its simple country way, has far more depth of feeling in it than verses penned by men of greater fame.
